This the second in my rant against unnecessary government agencies.  This is a five-part series and I am saving the best for last. Tonight let’s discuss the Department of Commerce.  Let me begin by informing you the United States of America survived from 1776 until 1913 without the Department of Commerce.  The Department was rooted in America’s first openly Progressive want-to-be dictators.

Dreamed up by President Theodore Roosevelt, the Agency was implemented by, you guessed it, Keynesian before his time, President Woodrow Wilson to expand his dream of unlimited government intervention.  Wilson  desired government intervention into America’s ability to trade, sell and transport, themselves and goods and services nation wide as well as internationally. I would love to spend time discussing our government’s protective role in “Free Trade,” while single handedly destroying American companies and their consumers, but I am going to attempt to stay on message.

Let’s get free of the government propaganda, that the agency is a helping hand we American’s could not live without and let’s dwell on an Agency that needs to be abolished.  You cannot defend the Department of Commerce by noting its accomplishments. I was under the impression the regulatory areas of the Department of Commerce would deal with commerce of goods and persons across the United States of America state borders, international borders, interstate public airwaves and telecommunications.

After many hours of research, I am at a loss to determine what useful intervention the Department of Commerce has done.  The majority of its authorized activity seems to be handled by numerous other agencies.  From the Federal Communications Commission to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, form the Department of Justice to the Department of Transportation, I found only two issues on record the Department of Commerce had ever exclusively addressed.

The agency does regulate imports and exports and the taxes applied to each.  They, along with other useless government agencies have played a pretty large role in exporting all our jobs overseas. Cheap Chinese goods are allowed to flood this country, while our home-grown companies are regulated out of business. The United States Government and companies like Wall Mart watch with a blind eye, while the Chinese ignore and break every rule in the humanitarian book, while hammering American Companies for non-existent federal violations.  Perhaps, I have been unfair, the Department of Commerce does operate the National Weather Service (with its “Red at night Sailors delight” methods of weather predicting), the United States Patent Office (currently taking nearly five years for patent or trademark approvals), and the Census Bureau (Opening its doors every ten years and owned and operated by the Democrat Party).  There are numerous other agencies under the wing of the Department of Commerce.  All these antiquated, inefficient organizations need to be sold to private entrepreneurs.

The Commerce Department is a real job killer. While Congress fiddles around in awe of what to do with the great powers wielded by the Commerce Department, The Executive Branch and it’s umbilically attached Treasury Department is drooling over the prospects of grabbing this “revenue generator” and placing its power under the Department of Treasury enforcement label!

Americans be on alert, there is only one Republican candidate who has specifically called out the Department of Commerce for restructure and elimination. Faithful to the constitution for decades and not just changing his skin to run for President of the United States, Ron Paul is the Man!
